To all the good ole boys out there
My question is concerning the Alaskan 19 ft Grand Banks Dory, by Spira International Inc.
I am asking has anyone built this boat, or seen this boat built, or knows anything about this boat. Its row, sail, outboard power."well"
I would really like some more information on this boat since I have plans in hand and plan on starting this project soon. I have been to all the dory sites on the internet, I think I have read every book i can find at the library, I see lots of 16 and14 ft boats out there, but I haven't seen a 19f, with 6 and a half foot beam. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again and ill keep checkin back
ps, real cool site glad i found it,
your friend panodano98/ o ya i live on vancouver island B.C. help

thanks for the info,,, this boat was designed in 1999 and i have talked to jeff spria himself several times viea e-mail,, i just would like to be able to find or chat with someone that has built this boat, so that i may not make all the mistakes that i for see coming my way smile you can view this boat @ http://home1.gte.net/jspira/boatbuilding/hd_alas.html
this is what he has to say about this boat, his words not mine....
The Alaskan was initially designed for a customer who lives in Alaska and wanted an excellent all around boat for having fun and fishing for Salmon. He liked the Nova Scotia dory but wanted something a bit bigger, something he could power from a well mounted outboard, and a boat that could be sailed in a pinch. So, the Alaskan for just that - universal power, an outboard, oars, or sails - and the sea kindliness inherent with the traditional Grand Banks dories.
thanks again and keep me posted,

panodano,
what do you plan using the boat for? Are you going to row it/ sail it/ or use a motor or all of the above? Are you going to fish out of it? Just curious. though i'm not building one nor have i seen that boat, i am building a 16' power dory designed by Tracy o'brien. It is also based on stitch and glue construction. Not sure i could be of any help, but if you have any questions regarding stitch and glue i may be able answer a few questions. Feel free to send me an email.
you also might check out the Wooden Boat Forum, lots' of helpful people there building wooden boats of all kinds.

Good luck and have fun building the boat.

Looks almost like my 18' Eastside. Motorwell, the whole works...

How do you rig it for sailing?

What part of Vancouver Island are you from?

To chumsalmon and gutz:
lets see if i can answer a few of these ?????? you guys have asked me.....first i plan to row it when i have to,,, sail it if i can learn ,, how to sail with out tipping it over,,lol,, and use the motor the rest of the time,, lol,,lol,, yes i want to fish out of it.. i live on vancouver island,, nanaimo b.c. so there is a really big saltchuck thats around me here to do just that,, fish, work on boat,, fish some more!!!!
And as i understand the plans for this boat to be able to sail it,, it uses a basic sprit rig,, 2 sails a basic main sail ,, and a small forward sail,, with a 14' main mast,, and 11 ft boom, with a 13 1/2 ft spar boom.
One of my big questions for this boat is what size of a motor, can i put on this boat. I don't want overkill, just want to be able to cruise 8 to 10 knots would be more than enough, were not out to win any speed contests, but because all i do know about dorys is what i have stuided. I do know that they are very sea worthy,, just by the fact that they have been around for over 100 years, tells me that they are trust worthy, and i feel good about that ...im not a fool when it comes to the saltchuck....no when to fish!!!! know when to go home!!!!!!!
I have posted on a few other sites looking for more info on this boat,, i really wish i could chat with some one who ownes one of these boats.. ill keep looking around,,,
I think i have stuidied these plans so many times that i could build it in my sleep (( ok i know i have)) funny what drives a man to build a boat,, damnest thing,,,,,,,,,now a nother cup of coffee,,,, and where did i lay those plans........................... panodano98,, stay tuned smile
